The Elmo Cake

If you are on facebook (and I'm pretty sure that anyone reading my blog...all 3 or 4 of you....are on facebook too!) then you saw my comment about the Elmo cake. The gist of it was that if I ever talk about making an Elmo cake again, remind me to just go to Publix. Anyhow, here it is! A $13 Elmo cake pan and 3 batches of icing later! The 3 batches of icing is because I made 1 batch and did the eyes, nose, and mouth. Then I tried to make red. I ended up with a really bright hot pink. So I tried again, and ended up with an orange-ish-brown. Not pretty. So I tried again and ended up with a weird shade of purple. And this is all using $14 Wilton food coloring, not just cheap Betty Crocker stuff. My mom, who used to cater weddings, told me that the only way I'd get a true red is to use a powder that they sell at cake stores (when was the last time you saw a cake store?). There is only ONE that I know of, and it's in Tucker, and my dad was so sweet to go yesterday and buy some for me, which they brought over this morning an hour before the party so we could finish Elmo! So as I said, next time I get this idea, tell me to call Publix!!!
